Summer is quickly fading and school is right around the corner for some and looming in the distance for many. We have talked about fitness (activity, diet, mental) and will now touch on academics. Hopefully you have spent a little of your summer keeping academically fit. If you haven’t, now is the time to start! Here are some strategies to stay academically fit.
* Make Time for Reading
Set aside time to read each day… 15 to 30 minutes per day is all it takes. The best part is that summer reading is more for enjoyment, but still offers a great opportunity to preserve and strengthen reading skills.
* Reading Comprehension
It is not enough to just read. Reading comprehension develops fact-retention and inference-making skills. Consider comprehension workbooks or online programs.
* Review and Build Grammar Skills
Find workbooks and/or online programs geared to your grade level reviewing and building grammar skills.
* Make Time for Math
Yes, take some time to do some math. Just three to four problems per day during the summer can prevent mathematical skills from getting rusty.
* Make Time for Creative Writing
Creative writing is a great way to improve written language skills while giving them a fun and imaginative activity during the summer. It doesn’t have to be a book! A creative paragraph or two each week will work wonders towards developing writing skills.
* Focus on Specific Skills
Do you know your weaknesses? It doesn’t hurt to pinpoint them and make time to give those areas a little more attention!
Summer is an ideal time to set aside 30 to 60 minutes (or longer) a day for academic fitness. Use every resource available to you. Online resources and teacher supply stores offer a wide variety of learning materials, workbooks, computer games, and other types of games to reinforce and strengthen academic skills. The school bell may have stopped ringing, but learning doesn’t have too!
Here is an awesome resource. Check it out Here.
