Today is New Year’s Eve. At midnight, we are going to usher in a brand New Year! So, I thought this post should focus on reflection. By dictionary definition, reflection means to engage in serious thought or consideration, to think deeply or carefully about something. One can reflect on something in a cursory manner, “I had a good game last night” but never wonder or even ask why I had a good game. Or, take reflection a step further and ask, could my game have been better. So, as this year winds down, and you are blessed to wake up to a brand new year, my challenge to you is to dive deeper into your reflections for what was and what is to come.
When one engages in true reflection, you are taking time to consider and contemplate the events, experiences, and lessons during a certain time period… in this case for 2023. Reflection involves introspection, examining one’s thoughts and feelings, and gaining insight into personal growth or areas for improvement. Reflection is a valuable tool for personal growth and development. It allows you to learn from your experiences, make more informed decisions, and set goals for the future based upon a deeper understanding of yourself and your circumstances. Reflection can take on many forms.
Self-Reflection is when you think about your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This can involve considering your own accomplishments, challenges, and personal goals. Self-reflection involves a conscious and deliberate effort to understand yourself, your motivations, and the impact of your behaviors on yourself and others. Self-reflection also involves being honest with yourself, acknowledging both strengths and weaknesses, and actively working towards personal growth and development.
Critical Reflection involves analyzing experience and events critically. You want to consider different perspectives and potential lessons learned. Delve into a deeper examination of your own underlying assumptions, biases, and societal influences that shapes who you are and your own perspectives.
Reflective Writing is putting your thoughts into words. Whether in a journal, blog, or some other written form, writing can help clarify your thoughts and facilitate deeper reflection.
Meditation and Mindfulness engages in practices that encourages present moment awareness and self-reflection.
Discussion with Others, such as a family member, friend, or mentor can open doors for discussion, listening, self-reflection, and learning.
Reflection is an ongoing and dynamic process. In other words, reflection should never be a one and done! When you take the time to dive deep into reflection, you open the door to a more fulfilling and purposeful life. Self-reflection allows you to learn from the past/current experiences and grow for the future.
