A sports concussion is a form of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs when an athlete takes a hit, jolt, or bump to the head—or even a hard impact to the body that makes the head and brain move quickly back and forth. This rapid movement can cause the brain to shake, twist, or shift inside the skull, leading to chemical changes and sometimes stretching or injury to brain cells.
