CONCUSSION RISKS

Blog PostWebsite Pictures 2025 (38)

For student-athletes, concussions carry several short-term and long-term risks if not taken seriously.

SHORT-TERM RISKS

Slower reaction times

→ higher chance of accidents or another injury.

Academic struggles

→ trouble concentrating, remembering, or keeping up with schoolwork.

Worsening symptoms

→ headaches, dizziness, or fatigue can get worse with activity.

LONG-TERM RISKS

Second Impact Syndrome

→ a rare but life-threatening condition that happens if a second concussion occurs before the first one has fully healed.

Prolonged Recovery

→ symptoms can last weeks or months if the brain isn’t given enough time to heal.

Repeated Concussions

→ increase the risk of lasting issues like memory problems, mood changes, or difficulty with focus and learning.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)

→ linked to repeated head injuries over time, though more common in professional athletes.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

👉 Big takeaway for student-athletes: The biggest risk is returning to play too soon. Proper rest, honest reporting of symptoms, and medical clearance are key to full recovery.
