While playing collegiate basketball for the San Jose State University (SJSU) Spartans from 2007 – 2010, Aumornai majored in and successfully graduated with a BA in Art, Concentration in Studio Practice: Preparation for Teaching (Art Education). Upon graduation, Aumornai landed a job with the San Francisco Unified School District teaching 6th and 7th grade Health and PE at Willie Brown Middle School. In addition to teaching, Aumornai is the Athletic Director for her school, and the girls basketball coach. She furthered her education by obtaining a Masters in Education from National University. Aumornai also has experience in working with students with disabilities, elementary education, non-profit organizations, and curriculum development.
Aumornai’s passion lies in working with disadvantaged and underserved youth. Beginning at the age of five, Aumornai spent her summers volunteering in a Special Education classroom during the summers. In college, she renewed that passion when she was given the opportunity to volunteer for Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI), a non-profit organization geared towards empowering female athletes to choose to matter in their communities. Upon graduating from SJSU, Aumornai became a Site Director for BAWSI, helping to run one of there many after school programs. In 2012, Aumornai returned for a 10 month internship with BAWSI as an Athlete Engagement Coordinator, learning the ins and outs of a non-profit. During the internship, she worked with a group to improve the BAWSI girls curriculum, which included creating healthy and athletic games and activities for 3-5th grade girls. With a partner she recreated the BAWSI Rollers curriculum, which specialized in activities for children with cognitive and physical disabilities. Aumornai also started a service project during her internship, which evolved into “The Right Fit”.
As Aumornai continues to move forward in her own education, teaching career, and pursuit of owning her own school, she continuously promotes the importance of a strong foundation for youth. “If they can see it than they can be it, and once they believe it they will achieve it.”
