There are a number of steps student-athletes can take to help prevent concussions.
CONCUSSION PREVENTION

PLAY SMART & SAFE
USE PROPER EQUIPMENT
Always wear the proper helmet or protective gear for your sport, and make sure your equipment fits correctly and is kept in good condition. While helmets help lower the risk of serious head injuries, it’s important to remember that they cannot prevent all concussions.
BUILD STRENGTH & SKILLS
Building neck and core strength can help protect your head by giving your body more stability during impact. It’s also important to learn safe techniques for tackling, heading, or falling to reduce the chance of injury. Staying in good overall physical shape further lowers the risk of getting hurt while playing sports.
SPEAK UP ABOUT SYMPTOMS
If you hit your head, or sustained an injury that could potentially lead to a concussion, or start to feel “off,” let a coach, trainer, or parent know right away. It’s important to be honest about how you’re feeling and never try to hide symptoms just to stay in the game.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
👉 Most important: Concussions can’t always be prevented, but playing smart, using proper equipment, and reporting symptoms early go a long way in protecting your brain.
